In Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, over five thousand people gathered at Plaza 28 de Julio to mark the start of the Janal Pixan festivities. The crowd, a mix of locals and visitors, watched as the grand Janal Pixan altar was lit, signifying the beginning of the "Pixanoob Saacil óol" (Deceased, beings of light) celebration. The event was led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, with thousands more joining the festivities on Fifth Avenue.
The lighting of the altar marks the start of a series of artistic and cultural activities scheduled from October 31 to November 3. The aim of these events is to honor the deceased and strengthen the cultural identity and traditions of Mexico and Solidaridad.
Mayor Mercado pledged to preserve and promote these traditions, emphasizing their importance in strengthening community identity. She expressed her hope that the celebration would not only be for visitors but also for local families and individuals who contribute to the community. The mayor encouraged everyone to feel part of the tribute, with each smile and memory shared reinforcing the connection to their culture.
Mayor Mercado visited 23 altars set up in Plaza 28 de Julio, each representing different Mexican states such as Baja California, Tabasco, Coahuila, and others. This effort was made possible by various municipal departments.
Finally, Mayor Mercado, along with councilors and members of her municipal cabinet, attended the start of the cultural program "Pixano'ob Saacil óol". The program featured performances from the Voladores de Papantla, the play "Los Huahuas", the IMCAS folk ballet, and the mariachi band "Atlantis", among others. Over the next few days, more cultural activities will take place, including a performance by songwriter Eugenia León on Saturday.
