Unveiling Playa del Carmen’s Mesmerizing Day of the Dead Parade

The second night of Playa del Carmen's Day of the Dead festivities was a spectacle of mysticism and tradition. Men and women donned traditional attire and accessories in tribute to the departed during the "U xíimbal pixano’ob" or Parade of the Pixanes. The parade, led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, started at Lázaro Cárdenas park in the Luis Donaldo Colosio neighborhood and concluded at the municipal cemetery.

As per tradition, the cemetery welcomed hundreds of visitors, including tourists from various countries, who came to participate in the Janal Pixan celebrations, also known as "Pixanoob Saacil óol" (The departed, beings of light).

Mayor Mercado emphasized the importance of these celebrations to the families of Solidaridad and the tourists visiting the area. She highlighted that in Solidaridad, and across Mexico, the tradition of remembering the departed is stronger than ever. This unique commemoration is marked by activities like Janal Pixan, particularly prevalent in this municipality and the Yucatan peninsula.

Mercado noted the high tourist turnout as a testament to the allure of these traditions. The night was marked by the scent of incense and candles, a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of loved ones.

The evening concluded with local authorities and special guests visiting the altars set up in Plaza 28 de Julio. These altars replicated the tradition across over 20 states of Mexico. Attendees also enjoyed visiting Mexican snack and craft stalls on 10th Street and partaking in various cultural and artistic events. For the second consecutive night, La Quinta Avenida was bustling with thousands of visitors enjoying the holiday weekend festivities.
