In Playa del Carmen, tour operators and shark diving enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the upcoming bull shark season. Recent sightings of these sharks during baiting sessions, an activity designed to attract sharks, have been reported by nine licensed operators. These operators, certified by the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas (Conanp), suggest that the bull shark season could officially commence within the next week or two, given the current conditions.
Candy López, a Conanp-certified bull shark instructor, explained that the start of the season is contingent not only on the regular presence of sharks but also on the port's opening for tourist vessels, which depends on the weather. "We've been observing fluctuating numbers, ranging from one to five, with a maximum of seven. We anticipate these numbers to stabilize in the coming days, at which point we can notify Conanp and receive the go-ahead to start the season," López said. To enhance safety and control, Conanp will also issue new certifications for bull shark observation operators this week, adding 30 more permit holders to the existing pool, bringing the total to 55.
However, the permit for conducting baiting activities, which necessitates specialized skills in bait handling and understanding shark behavior, remains restricted to only nine permit holders. The bull shark season in Playa del Carmen not only serves as a significant tourist attraction but also presents a logistical and safety challenge. Strict regulations are in place to strike a balance between tourism and the conservation of this iconic Caribbean species.
