Hoteliers in Quintana Roo are gearing up for the impending arrival of sargassum. They are employing up to 300 staff members to clear the macroalgae from the beaches. This is in addition to the anti-sargassum barriers that the Navy has installed.
The number of employees deployed for this task varies by hotel, with some mobilizing up to 300 workers. This is determined by the anticipated volume of sargassum, which can vary significantly. These efforts are complemented by the use of nets which drastically reduce the amount of sargassum that reaches the shore, according to Jesus Almaguer Salazar, the president of the Association of Hotels in Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres.
Salazar also highlighted the effectiveness of preventative measures against sargassum. Ships intercept the macroalgae in the open sea, which reduces the quantity that eventually washes up on the beaches.
The Secretary of the Navy (Semar) has allocated 22 smaller vessels to support the operations of the "Natans" vessel for the upcoming season.
In addition to these measures, the most popular beaches of Quintana Roo will see the installation of over 8,600 meters of anti-sargassum barriers this spring. The region will also deploy four beach sweepers, 22 small vessels, 11 algae collectors, one oceanic vessel, and eight amphibious bands to manage the macroalgae during this year's rafting season.
