As the winter migration season commences, running from October to March, the Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC) is inviting the public to join in a special bird watching event. The event, titled "Birds and their Urban Migratory Passage", is scheduled for Saturday, November 16, at the Urban Heart Park, from 6 to 8 am.
This activity is part of the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, an initiative championed by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. The agreement prioritizes environmental protection and encourages citizen participation in activities that foster respect and conservation of the natural environment, as highlighted by the FPMC's general director, Juanita Alonso Marrufo.
The bird monitoring event, organized by the Department of Environmental Conservation and Education (CEA) and led by Rafael Chacón Díaz, aims to involve the community in environmental conservation and biodiversity care on the island. This is particularly important for the bird species that migrate thousands of kilometers and stop in Cozumel due to its strategic location. The island provides these birds with a place to rest, feed, and regain energy for the continuation of their journey.
During the bird watching day, participants will have the opportunity to observe various migratory species that visit the island and take refuge in urban areas. Expert guidance and appropriate equipment will be provided for the activity. Participants can expect to see species such as vireos, warblers, tanagers, and wood-warblers.
The FPMC's initiative aims to not only bring citizens closer to nature but also to raise awareness about the importance of preserving bird habitats. Birds play a vital role in balancing the ecosystem and this initiative helps to maintain Cozumel's status as the first "Bird City" in Latin America.
CEA director, Rafael Chacón Díaz, has announced that those interested in participating in the "Birds and their Urban Migratory Passage" day can register for free at the following link https://bit.ly/InscripcionCEA.
