The Akumal Monkey Sanctuary, located in Cancún, is celebrating its ninth anniversary with great enthusiasm. The President of the Akumal Foundation, Javier Martínez, proudly shared the sanctuary's accomplishments. Initially established as a rescue and preservation center for spider monkeys, the sanctuary has experienced significant growth.

"From just 10 monkeys, we now shelter around 390 animals from 56 different species, including flamingos, reptiles, ostriches, and zebras," Martinez said.

The sanctuary has made significant progress in rescuing and rehabilitating animals for reintroduction into their natural habitats. Martinez also pointed out the sanctuary's unique collaboration with the Olympic Games, participating in a recording that explores the relationship between animals and sports.

The sanctuary is currently expanding, with plans to offer camping facilities by 2025. This will allow visitors to observe monkeys in a semi-free environment. At present, tourists can enjoy a tour that includes flamingo observation and a visit to a cenote.

The Akumal Foundation recently achieved a significant milestone when the sanctuary was chosen as the host for the Primatology Association of America (ASP) event. For the first time in 25 years, the ASP will hold its event outside the United States. The international event is expected to attract around 3,000 primatology experts and enthusiasts to Akumal, highlighting the sanctuary's importance in primate conservation and study.

The sanctuary is dedicated not only to animal conservation but also to their overall well-being. It provides the animals with nutritional, psychological, and medical care. Martinez shared touching stories of rescued animals, such as Ampere, a monkey who suffered severe injuries but has significantly contributed to the rehabilitation of others.

The success of the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary is a testament to the Foundation's commitment to animal preservation and well-being. With a combination of local and international efforts, the sanctuary continues to spearhead wildlife protection and education about the importance of conservation.
