Concerns over the conditions of captivity in the Barceló Grand Maya hotel's dolphinarium have been raised following the tragic deaths of two dolphins, Plata and Tulagui. Over the past year, both dolphins were reportedly attacked by the alpha dolphin, Mincho, in an environment that did not allow them to escape. This information was provided by Dolphin Freedom Mx, an animal rights organization.
Plata's case has been especially distressing. It is alleged that the dolphin lost its sight due to the negligence of those responsible for its care. During transport from Fiji, Plata's eye was continuously scraped against the cloth of the stretcher, with the staff seemingly unaware of the damage. Upon arrival in Cancún, the damage was found to be irreversible. Activists suggest that Tulagui may have experienced similar conditions.
Plata was reportedly found with severe injuries in the tank and, despite attempts to rush him to a vet in Cancún, he did not survive. Tulagui met a similar fate months later. Animal rights activists argue that captive dolphins, like Mincho, experience high levels of stress which can lead to increased aggression. In the wild, submissive dolphins can escape from alpha attacks, but in captivity, they have no such option.
Animal rights organizations are urgently calling for the closure of the dolphinarium, labeling it as a cruel and unnecessary practice. At the same time, international protests have been organized to raise awareness about the consequences of dolphin captivity. The planned protests include:
- Saturday, January 25
- Mexico City: 12:00 p.m. at the Hotel Barceló Reforma.
- Sunday, January 26
- Cancún: 4:00 p.m. at Occidental Costa Cancún.
- Puerto Aventuras: 4:00 p.m. at Barceló Hotel Grand Maya.
- Barcelona, Spain: 11:00 a.m. at the Hotel Barceló Raval.
Activists insist that the blame for these deaths lies with establishments that keep these animals in constant stressful conditions. The message is clear: dolphinariums should be closed and the exploitation of marine mammals must end.
