American Tourist Couple Released in Cancún Hotel Fraud Case

The Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo, Mexico, announced the release of an American tourist couple who were detained in Cancún for alleged fraud against a local hotel chain. The couple, Paul and Christy Lin from Michigan, were accused of breaching a timeshare contract with the Palace chain. They were arrested at Cancún airport in early March.

The couple's release follows a reparatory agreement reached with the hotel company. This agreement was validated by a Control Judge, leading to their immediate release and the dismissal of the criminal case. The Palace chain stated that the funds from the agreement will be donated to three non-profit organizations.

Interestingly, the official statement did not mention the involvement of Congressman Tom Barrett. Barrett traveled to Cancún to support the couple and shared his experiences on social media.

Upon his arrival, Barrett visited the couple in prison, describing the conditions as deplorable and leaving the couple feeling afraid and hopeless. He assured them that he was doing everything in his power to secure their release.

Following his visit, Barrett met with the President of the Supreme Court of Quintana Roo to expedite any possible assistance. He expressed gratitude to the US State Department for their resources and support in resolving the couple's predicament.

Shortly after the Attorney General's Office announced the couple's release, Congressman Barrett posted a video of the couple boarding a plane. He accompanied the video with a message stating, "Paul and Christy Akeo are going home, mission accomplished."
