AMLO’s Maya Train Project in Peril: Unfinished Routes Revealed

A bustling construction site with various heavy machinery, trucks, and workers in action, set against a backdrop of exposed earth and a clear sky.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will not be able to fully inaugurate the Maya Train project, a massive railway system spanning over 1,554 kilometers. A recent visit to sections 6 and 7 of the train route, overseen by the National Defense Secretary, revealed unfinished bridges, train stations still under construction, and unorganized railway tracks.

In some areas, only the rough outline of the proposed route is visible. Despite these setbacks, hundreds of workers are laboring intensively to make headway on the project. This situation starkly contrasts with President López Obrador’s earlier optimism, as he had previously announced multiple projected inauguration dates.

The Maya Train project, which began construction in 2020, was initially estimated to cost 156 billion pesos. However, the current investment has skyrocketed to over 515 billion pesos. This unfinished project will now be passed onto the administration of Claudia Sheinbaum.
