Playa del Carmen is seeing an average of one report of animal abuse every day, with 31 cases recorded in October alone, as per Orlando García, the Director of Environmental Standards of Solidaridad. Approximately 80% of these reported cases have already been addressed by the authorities.
García stated that out of the 31 reports, 25 have been dealt with, indicating an almost 80% progress rate in handling these incidents. These reports, lodged by citizens either via phone or in person, encompass a wide range of issues. These include animal abuse and abandonment, neglect such as leaving animals without food or water, and exposure to the sun. One instance involved a dog attacking minors, which was also promptly addressed by the authorities.
Out of the 25 reports that have been processed, four cases have been concluded with the imposition of financial penalties on the culprits, García revealed. He noted, "Four cases have already been addressed with financial penalties applied." Among the resolved cases, García highlighted the rescue of three dogs in the beach area of Solidaridad, which was initiated after beachgoers alerted the authorities about the animals' predicament.
The Solidaridad administration is striving to increase surveillance on animal welfare and environmental protection issues. They are encouraging citizens to continue reporting any irregularities so that immediate action can be taken.
