130 Families Defend Homes in Tulum Eviction Showdown

Local authorities and municipal police recently tried to forcefully evict approximately 130 families from a disputed property on the outskirts of Tulum. The residents, who have been living on this property for seven years, resisted the eviction, considering the land their heritage.

The property, which spans three hectares, has been a subject of contention since the original owner's death. The families have even constructed houses on the land, referring to the settlement as "Tren Maya". The authorities' attempted eviction was met with protest, as residents defended their homes with rocks and sticks, causing the police to retreat.

The residents claim that the authorities abused their power during the eviction attempt. They allege that the police targeted homes where only mothers and their young children were present. Some residents also reported that their belongings were stolen by the police during the incident.

Adding to the tension, personnel from the municipal DIF (a local social service agency) allegedly tried to remove children from the homes during the eviction attempt. However, they were unsuccessful in their efforts. This incident underscores the ongoing dispute over the property and the precarious situation of the families living there.
