Journalists covering the police beat in Cancún were targeted in an attempted kidnapping by suspected hitmen. The incident took place in the irregular settlement of Valle Verde.
The reporters had responded to an emergency call about a firearm injury in Valle Verde. After searching the area and finding no one injured, they prepared to depart. As they were leaving, one of the journalists, Nicolás "N", was ambushed by the alleged hitmen. They stole his motorcycle and shoulder bag, and attempted to kidnap him.
Nicolás "N" managed to escape and find cover just as local police arrived on the scene. A shootout with the hitmen ensued, but they managed to flee without being apprehended. Other journalists, who had heard the gunfire, rushed to the scene.
Nicolás "N" recounted that had the police not arrived when they did, he might have been kidnapped and potentially killed. He described a white car and a red and black motorcycle following him as he left the area. One of the hitmen, riding the motorcycle, brandished a weapon and stole his motorcycle and bag. When the police arrived, the hitman fired at them, sparking the shootout.
The hitmen, finding themselves outnumbered, abandoned their motorcycle and fled into a nearby bush area. They evaded capture by the local Citizen Security police.
Members of the National Guard arrived at the scene and provided protection for Nicolás "N". The incident took place in Valle Verde, an irregular zone located two hundred meters from Av. José López Portillo.
It was later reported that the white car involved in the incident was also implicated in an alleged rescue of five undocumented individuals who were being detained by Public Security police. The car was identified as a KIA.
