The beaches of Playa del Carmen are a significant asset to the local tourism industry, according to municipal president Estefanía Mercado. She made this statement during a tour with representatives from various sectors of society who are working together with the Solidaridad government to develop strategies to restore the beaches.
"Our beaches are our greatest treasure and the heart of our tourism industry," said Mercado. "We are collaborating with all sectors and key voices in Playa del Carmen to create a comprehensive plan to protect and preserve our coasts. Our goal is to ensure that they remain a source of pride for our community and a world-class destination."
The tour included a visit to El Recodo beach, an area that has historically suffered the most erosion along the coastline of Solidaridad county. During the visit, business leaders, tourist service providers, hotel sector representatives, and other local organizations agreed to initiate a project called "Diagnosis of the State of the Beaches and the Comprehensive Strategy of the Study."
This project aims to address the issues of erosion, risks, and coastal vulnerability in Playa del Carmen. Mercado was joined by the Secretaries of Environment and Climate Change, Samantha Álvarez, and of Tourism, Estefanía Hernández, as well as the head of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) in the county, Irving Lili Madrigal. They all emphasized the importance of teamwork in tackling this issue.
Mercado also acknowledged the contributions of all tourism sectors interested in participating in the development of strategies for beach recovery and conservation. She noted that the beaches are not only the entry point to the destination but also contribute to the well-being and prosperity of Playa del Carmen's families.
In conclusion, Mercado stressed the need for expert knowledge in addressing beach recovery. She advocated for a comprehensive, sustainable project that will provide lasting benefits for the tourist destination.
