Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Civil Protection authorities rescued two tourists who were swept 14 kilometers offshore by strong currents while attempting to surf near Playa del Carmen. The incident occurred near 88th Street beach early Sunday morning.

Hours-Long Ordeal Ends in Rescue

The victims, a 24-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man, both Argentine nationals, entered the water at approximately 7:30 a.m. but were overpowered by wind and waves, preventing their return to shore. They alerted emergency services via Mexico’s 911 system.

A coordinated search operation was launched, involving Civil Protection personnel and local service providers using a boat and a jet ski. The pair was eventually located and brought ashore at Xcalacoco Beach, where paramedics treated them for mild heat exhaustion. No serious injuries were reported.

Warning Issued Amid Hazardous Conditions

Authorities urged beachgoers to exercise extreme caution due to unusually strong seasonal winds and currents. The incident highlights ongoing risks along the Riviera Maya coastline.
