In a special event at Chumul beach in Cozumel, 200 baby sea turtles were set free after being rescued and sheltered from Hurricane Beryl.
During this event, 200 loggerhead turtles, scientifically known as Caretta caretta, were released. These turtles were among the 4,300 eggs that had been relocated from vulnerable nests near the water to safer hatching grounds. The local mayor, Juanita Alonso, praised the event, emphasizing that these turtles now have a renewed opportunity to return to the sea, embodying strength and resilience.
Hurricane Beryl impacted 90% of the monitored nests, resulting in the postponement of scheduled releases until early or mid-September due to the destruction of many nests.
