Bacalar Floods Displace Community: Urgent Situation!

Residents from the Diego Rojas and Nuevo Progreso communities in Bacalar have been displaced due to severe flooding during this year's rainy season. They will not be able to return to their homes until the water levels have fully receded and the area is deemed safe.

Marcelino Jiménez Contreras, the Director of Civil Protection, stated that a total of 50 families residing in these communities have been significantly impacted. These families, spread across 35 homes, have experienced extreme rainfall unusual for the Quintana Roo state.

The situation was exacerbated by the Maya Train project, as the construction redirected water towards these communities, resulting in floods of up to 3.5 meters. Contreras explained that prior drainage dredging work in other parts of the municipality helped to mitigate the impact of the floods, which is why efforts are now concentrated on assisting the affected residents in Diego Rojas and Nuevo Progreso.

Currently, the displaced families have sought refuge with relatives, awaiting the all-clear to return to their homes. However, ongoing rainfall has complicated efforts to drain the flooded areas. While water levels have decreased significantly, recent rains have caused a resurgence of flooding in these communities, putting pressure on Civil Protection agents.
