Farmers and beekeepers from the town of Halachó are calling for action from the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), alleging that poultry company Bachoco is illegally dumping manure in the Yucatán jungle. This activity is reportedly taking place near their crops and bee hives, close to the Mayan town of San Antonio Sihó, which falls under Halachó's jurisdiction.
Bachoco operates three large poultry farms in the area, which have been a source of controversy due to the alleged illegal waste disposal. Despite previous complaints and land closures, it appears that Bachoco has not yet faced sanctions from Profepa.
The company is accused of shifting its polluting activities to the common lands of San Antonio Sihó. This has sparked outrage and complaints from local residents, as well as Mayan beekeeping organizations from the Yucatán Peninsula. They are calling for another intervention by Profepa, an end to the pollution, and reparations for the damage already caused.
Bachoco is alleged to have dumped over 100 tons of waste near the community. This is causing significant harm to the local ecosystem, including the flora, fauna, and fresh water reserves. The company has reportedly not informed the community about its activities and has restricted the movement of local residents.
Mayan beekeeping organizations have lodged legal complaints against Bachoco for these illegal dumps in San Antonio Sihó. They argue that the company's actions are not only illegal, but also violate several environmental laws. They are calling for urgent action from federal authorities to halt Bachoco's polluting activities.
