Volunteers from the Sal a Pajarear initiative in the Yucatan Peninsula recently gathered in Cobá, Quintana Roo, to honor Barbara McKinnon, also known as "the Mayab Birder." McKinnon has dedicated her life to promoting environmental education in the region, with a particular focus on birding.

Her efforts have cultivated a sense of environmental consciousness and a community of dedicated bird watchers committed to preserving local ecosystems. The tribute was part of the annual meeting of the Sal a Pajarear Yucatán program volunteers, an initiative that unites 23 communities across Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.

Originally from New York, McKinnon became a permanent resident of the Yucatán Peninsula after a visit in 1969. Since then, she has been an unwavering advocate for birding as a means to encourage environmental conservation.

McKinnon's work has had a significant impact on the region. Her book, "Memories of the Mayab Birder," has played a crucial role in promoting birding activities throughout the peninsula.
