José Luis Kelly recently took over as Belize's Consul in Quintana Roo, located in Chetumal. He replaced Luis Montero, whose diplomatic term ended in early 2024. In his inaugural address, Kelly pledged to enhance the trade and economic connections between Quintana Roo and Belize. He emphasized the city of Chetumal, which shares a rich, centuries-old history with Belize.

Kelly highlighted numerous opportunities for growth in sectors such as medical services, education, commerce, and tourism. He said, "Belizeans and Mexicans, particularly those from Chetumal, have shared a common narrative. Historically, we are more than neighbors – we are family, with borders that bring us closer rather than separate us."

A meeting between Belizean and Mexican authorities and business sectors was held to address shared concerns. The goal is to establish a collaborative work group to tackle issues related to tourism, trade, and security. This will involve all levels of government and various business chambers.

The inauguration of the new consul was attended by notable figures from both countries, reflecting their mutual interest in strengthening commercial ties between Quintana Roo and Belize.
