The body of Shani Louk, a German national living in Tulum, Mexico, has been discovered by Israeli authorities. Louk, the girlfriend of Mexican national Orion Hernandez Badoux, had been kidnapped by the Hamas group.
Louk and her boyfriend Orion had embarked on a vacation to Israel in late September 2023. Following a series of violent incidents perpetrated by Hamas and shared on social media, images of Louk's body were seen being paraded around several communities in the Gaza Strip. Her body, tied to a spare tire and bearing severe injuries, was displayed semi-nude on Hamas's social media as a gruesome testament to their violent retaliation against the Israeli people.
Before the tragic incident, Louk, a tattoo artist in Tulum, and Orion, a native of the city, had attended the Nova music festival in southern Israel. The festival featured performances by several artists on a stage set up in an open area.
Israel's chief military spokesman, Daniel Hagari, confirmed that Israeli forces have recovered the bodies of three hostages kidnapped in the Gaza Strip. Shani Louk was among the victims, along with Amit Buskila and Yitzhak Gelernter.
The three were captured during a surprise attack by Hamas on the Nova music festival on October 7. According to Hagari, they were killed by Hamas while attempting to escape. Their bodies were then transported to Gaza. The attack resulted in the deaths of over 1,170 people, mostly civilians. More than 250 people were kidnapped during the attack, with 128 still held captive in Gaza. It is believed that 36 of the captives have since died.
In retaliation, Israel has launched a comprehensive offensive in Gaza, involving air, ground, and sea forces. This campaign has reportedly led to the deaths of over 35,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health authorities. The intense bombings have displaced most of Gaza's 2.3 million residents, triggering a severe humanitarian crisis. The ongoing conflict and the escalating humanitarian disaster in Gaza have drawn increasing international concern.
