December 15 marks the first anniversary of the Maya Train, a key initiative of the federal government. This railway, linking various locations in southeastern Mexico, has been showcased at international expos and to travel operators. Quintana Roo authorities are hopeful that these strategies will increase passenger numbers, which currently stand at only 19.5% of the federal government's initial target.

MAYA TRAIN'S CURRENT PERFORMANCE

The original forecast for the Maya Train was to carry three million passengers annually, or about 8,200 passengers per day. However, official data from the military administration overseeing the project shows that only 1,600 passengers use the service daily.

In terms of user demographics:

  • Local residents: Make up 5% of the total, or 24,500 people.
  • Domestic tourists: Account for 66%, or 317,700 passengers.
  • International tourists: Comprise 29%, or 138,479 passengers.

MOST POPULAR STATIONS

The stations with the highest passenger volumes mirror the region's main tourist hotspots:

  1. Cancun: 86,401 passengers.
  2. Mérida: 75,486 passengers.
  3. Campeche: 34,481 passengers.
  4. Playa del Carmen: 31,896 passengers.
  5. Valladolid: 27,251 passengers.
  6. Palenque: 18,607 passengers.

These six stations represent 80.4% of the total passenger count as of August 2024.

TOURISM INTEGRATION STRATEGIES

Quintana Roo's Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, emphasized that the key to boosting the Maya Train's usage among international tourists is to sell tickets in advance. This would enable travel operators to incorporate the railway into packages that include transportation, theme park admissions, and other attractions.

ANNIVERSARY EVENTS

The anniversary celebration will feature the opening of Section 7, connecting Chetumal with Escárcega, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, according to Quintana Roo's governor Mara Lezama. Óscar David Lozano Águila, the Maya Train's general director, also announced the launch of 10 tourist packages, which include:

  • Discounted rates from Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA).
  • Accommodation at the new Maya Train hotels.

Furthermore, the "First Anniversary of the Maya Train" campaign has been launched, running until December 21, with promotions, giveaways, and special activities at stations and on social media.

A PROJECT WITH A FORWARD-LOOKING VISION

Authorities remain hopeful about the Maya Train's future as a key component of both national and international tourism. The project aims to revolutionize travel in southeastern Mexico's destinations and stimulate the regional economy.
