The southern region of Quintana Roo is set for a significant transformation with the approval of the 'Lahun Tiku' tourism project. This long-term initiative, approved in February 2023, is set to roll out in phases over the next 30 years. The project aims to revitalize the region with a strong emphasis on sustainability and community inclusion. It includes plans for boutique hotels, residential housing, a marine detachment, health clinics, a church, a museum, a university center, and commercial zones. These zones are designed to highlight local crafts and regional cuisine through the addition of more than ten restaurants. The 'Lahun Tiku' community, situated in the Othón P. Blanco municipality, is a collaborative effort between entrepreneurs and government bodies at three levels. It is driven by the local community's desire to attract investment to one of the state's most underprivileged areas.

The development is also expected to bring about significant economic and social progress. A substantial investment will fund the renovation of the Mahahual Airstrip, new security infrastructures, and a broad range of services including commerce and housing. The project aims to not only transform the region's economic landscape but also strengthen community cohesion and the social fabric in one of the state's most marginalized areas. It offers new opportunities for local residents and positions Quintana Roo at the forefront of responsible tourism and community innovation.
