The Secretariat of Finance and Planning of Quintana Roo has set a deadline of March 31 for vehicle registration renewals. This applies to over 58,000 registered vehicles in Cozumel, half of which are motorcycles. Interestingly, 50% of these vehicles are being used irregularly on the island.

Paul Quintero Marí, a representative of the SEFIPLAN on the island, has urged the community to renew their vehicle registrations and update their vehicle details. He noted that many of the 58,000 registered vehicle owners have not yet applied for their plates. He warned that failure to do so could result in future sanctions and surcharges.

"To accommodate taxpayers who are unable to process their renewals during the week, we have opened the license plate module on Saturdays," Marí explained. "However, the final Saturday for this will be March 29, with March 31 being the absolute deadline for transactions without surcharge for those who are up to date."

Discounts of up to 20% will be offered to those who are overdue on their renewals. So far, only 70% of the 58,000 registered vehicles have fulfilled their commitments. Marí reminded that those who have fully paid their dues are exempt from the tenure payment, while those who are a year or more overdue receive up to a 20% discount.

While the exact number of unregistered vehicles is unknown, estimates suggest it could be 50% more than the current registered number. These vehicle owners will be targeted in ongoing operations from April 1, following the expiry of the renewal period.
