Presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum was met by over 100 striking police officers in Campeche this Tuesday. The officers sought her assistance with a list of demands they claim have been ignored by Governor Layda Sansores San Román. Sheinbaum was approached during a campaign event at the Campeche XXI International Convention Center. A female officer, representing her colleagues, handed Sheinbaum a list of their demands, including the cessation of wage withholdings for those still on strike.
Despite being on strike, the officers made it clear they continue to serve the public, even using gasoline donated by citizens. Sheinbaum, who is currently campaigning for the Presidency, explained she could not immediately resolve their issues. However, she promised to forward their list of demands to the appropriate parties, without specifying where. This response was met with satisfaction from the officers, who expressed their trust in Sheinbaum and their hope for her full support if she becomes President.
Sheinbaum, representing Morena, PT, and PVEM parties, has been leading in public opinion polls. According to a recent poll published on April 26 by El Financiero, just before the second presidential debate, she held 49 percent of the voting intention. She was followed by Xóchitl Gálvez (PRI, PAN, and PRD) with 32 percent, and Jorge Álvarez Máynez from the Citizen's Movement (MC) with a distant 8 percent. The 2024 Mexican elections are shaping up to be a significant event for Sheinbaum, Gálvez, and Máynez.
