Crackdown on Unauthorized Taxis at Cancun Airport

The National Guard is planning an operation to address the issue of unlicensed taxi services, often referred to as "Pirate Taxis", operating at Cancun International Airport. Over a thousand such services are believed to be operating without the necessary permits.

The operation aims to permanently remove these unauthorized taxi services from various access points at the airport. The National Guard will be responsible for overseeing this operation. The initiative is part of ongoing discussions held throughout 2024, aimed at regulating tourist transportation.

One of the proposed changes involves relocating official transport services, which are accredited by the company managing the airport. This accreditation allows these services to operate from designated zones within the airport, reducing the risk of tourists falling victim to fraud.

Accredited companies will be clearly identified and added to a registry, making it easier to locate and penalize them if they commit any offenses. This level of accountability is not currently possible with taxis operating outside the airport terminals.

The National Guard will work alongside the airport authorities to ensure that only official transport services are permitted to operate outside the terminals. Federal agents will supervise the operation to ensure its legality.

The authorities have already begun implementing signage to guide tourists through the airport to the platforms where official transport services, buses, and transport to the Tren Maya are located. Information will also be provided at exit doors, detailing the authorized companies.

Only transport services that meet the requirements of federal law will be permitted to operate. This includes having a federal plate, which is a requirement for all transport services operating in docks and airports. These services must also comply with the rules set by the company managing the airport.
