“Cancun Airport Stumbles: Domestic Flights Decline, Impacting Growth”

Cancun International Airport experienced a 13.2% decrease in domestic passengers during the first four months of 2024. This drop, which equates to over 473,235 people, has impacted the overall growth of the airport terminal, which only saw a 0.1% increase compared to the previous year.

According to Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR), the airport welcomed 3.1 million passengers on domestic flights during this period. In contrast, the same period in 2023 saw 3.5 million arrivals. The most significant decline occurred in April, with a drop of 19.8%.

This downward trend is not exclusive to Cancun. Other airports managed by ASUR, such as Huatulco and Mérida, have also experienced decreases of 19.3% and 2.2% respectively. In just the last month, Cancun International Airport saw a decrease of 196,436 passengers, averaging 6,500 fewer passengers per day.

International flights also saw a decrease, with 36,000 fewer passengers, a 2% drop. However, the overall balance for the period showed an increase of 6.3%. This increase helped offset the decline in domestic flights, resulting in an overall rise of 0.1%.

The state Tourism Department also reported a market drop. Figures from the first two months of the year show that market participation is at 29%, a decrease from 37% in 2023.

By the end of the first four months, the airport reported a total of 11,332,000 passengers, both domestic and international. This represents a modest growth of only 13,845 passengers compared to the same period last year.

Earlier in the year, airlines such as Aeroméxico and Volaris had to inspect their Boeing planes, leading to adjustments in schedules and routes. Despite these challenges, Cancun remains a leader in domestic route scheduling for the year. The Tourism Department estimates nearly three million seats between Mexico City and Cancun, with connections to at least 24 other cities.
