According to a recent report by the national epidemiological center, Quintana Roo, a state in Mexico, has registered 7,751 HIV cases as of the fourth week of 2025. This accounts for 4.6% of the total HIV cases in the country. The states with the highest number of cases nationally are Mexico with 18,609 cases, Mexico City with 14,588, and Veracruz with 13,775.

Interestingly, the cities of Cancún and Playa del Carmen account for a significant 88.6% of the cases in Quintana Roo. Specifically, Cancún has reported 553 cases and Playa del Carmen has reported 283. Other municipalities in Quintana Roo with noteworthy numbers include Cozumel with 47 cases, Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto both with 19 cases, and Bacalar with 17.

On the other hand, the municipalities with the lowest incidence are Isla Mujeres with one case and Lázaro Cárdenas with two. In the fourth week of 2025, Mexico reported 604 new HIV cases nationally. Of these, 298 were in the first phase of the disease and 192 in the second. The State of Mexico reported the highest number of recent cases at 120, followed by Jalisco with 38, Veracruz with 51, and Quintana Roo with 42.

The report highlights that those living with HIV often face multiple inequalities, including limited access to health services and the stigma associated with the disease. These barriers often prevent many from receiving adequate treatment, thereby perpetuating the spread of the infection and increasing the number of undetected cases.

This data underscores the pressing need to continue prevention and treatment strategies to contain the spread of HIV in Mexico. In response, the Government of Quintana Roo is taking steps to strengthen prevention measures, ensure access to diagnosis, and provide timely treatments for the health and well-being of its population.
