Cancun is set to be a hot spot for American tourists this summer, with reservation books indicating an average occupancy rate of up to 70%. According to Allianz Travel's deputy director, Joana del Toro, Cancun tops the list of preferred summer vacation destinations for Americans, followed by Los Cabos in Baja California.
The popularity of these Mexican destinations is expected to result in a 3.5% increase in spending during the holiday period, averaging around $2,843 per household. "The rising interest in travel is likely to boost the economy across the entire tourist value chain in these destinations," del Toro said. "Mexico is the only country with more than one city on the list of Americans' preferred sites, demonstrating the country's diverse and competitive tourism offerings."
The report reveals that around six million travel itineraries for the upcoming summer are set to include Cancun. The Cancun Hotel Association, which also covers Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, reports a positive 65% to 70% occupancy rate in reservation books for the season. They are hopeful that this will increase to full occupancy over the summer, largely due to tourists from the United States and Canada.
Trips are expected to last between five and eight days on average, contributing to the anticipated influx of vacationers. Allianz Travel predicts a 15% growth in the market compared to last year's season.
Other popular destinations on the list include Puerto Vallarta, ranked seventh, along with Oranjestad, London, Punta Cana, Montego Bay, Providenciales, Paris, and Nassau.
