“Revolutionizing Traffic: Cancún Goes Vertical with Parking Lots!”

Officials from the Benito Juárez municipality are planning to introduce vertical parking lots in downtown Cancún to address the shortage of parking spaces. Carlos del Castillo, director of Cancún District, stated that multiple departments are collaborating on the development of a project to alleviate this traffic concern.

"We are designing 'vertical parking lots' for the downtown area. The project is being managed and implemented from all angles, from architectural considerations to execution strategies," he explained.

A vertical parking lot is a multi-story structure that can accommodate several cars in a compact space. This can free up sidewalks and create more pedestrian-friendly streets in downtown Cancún. Castillo revealed that the authorities are currently identifying potential locations for these parking lots in superblocks 5, 2, and 22. They are examining legal aspects, as well as the size and spatial characteristics of these areas, to secure the necessary investments for the project.

As for the Blanquita cinema, which was torn down to make way for a new cinema with public parking, Castillo said it would soon be available as a parking space for Municipal Palace workers during morning hours. This will help alleviate the parking issue on Nader Avenue.

"In the afternoons, the space will also be available for visitors to 'Las Palapas' park," he added. The goal of this initiative is to restore the tourism and economic vitality of the downtown area. To achieve this, pedestrian-friendly and accessible roads are essential, along with a communication system to facilitate mobility.

Castillo also addressed the controversy over removing parking spaces in the downtown area. He explained that the new traffic criteria prioritize pedestrians, followed by universal accessibility, bikes, public transport, and lastly, cars. He assured that these changes do not eliminate parking spaces, as the new structures will be located on red corners, areas where parking was previously not permitted.
