Vladimir Mayllen, the general manager of Gran Outlet Riviera Maya, recently discussed a new trend in Cancún's shopping centers known as "shopping tourism". This approach focuses on providing experiences to tourists while they shop. Currently, tourists make up about 25% of the total visitors to these shopping centers.

Marketing Consultants, a consulting firm, reveals that half of all tourists make purchases during their visits to tourist destinations, spending an average of $324. In light of this, Mayllen shared that they are finalizing partnerships with hotels and tour operators to draw more visitors to the shopping centers. Their goal is to increase tourist traffic to 80%, primarily targeting American tourists.

The strategy is to transform shopping centers into all-in-one destinations with stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The aim is not just to sell a product or a shop, but to sell an experience that tourists can enjoy while spending time in the malls.

Mayllen also highlighted the significant investments made in the mall, including the introduction of unique concepts such as a themed restaurant that was previously only found in Mexico City. This addition is expected to generate more publicity and attract more visitors.

He emphasized that shopping centers are evolving beyond just shopping destinations. They now include entertainment areas like go-kart tracks, and by the end of May, they plan to open an ice-skating rink. Mayllen also mentioned ongoing discussions with investors to bring in more attractions.
