The Cancún Fire Department is set to play a significant role in the security and protection operations for the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe pilgrimages. They plan to deploy 30 personnel to churches expecting worshippers and roadside posts at the municipality's entrance.
The department's director, Aquileo Cervantes Álvarez, announced this plan. He further stated that the department would oversee the city's vehicle and pilgrim traffic. They will also monitor the Antorcha Guadalupana walk, which begins this Wednesday at 5:00 PM from the entrance from Mérida.
In addition to these operations, Cervantes Álvarez noted that the department has 375 personnel stationed at six bases around the city. These personnel will also assist with the Guadalupe-Reyes and holiday operations, focusing on fire prevention and initial firefighting stages.
Cervantes Álvarez mentioned that in past years, the department has responded to approximately 3,000 initial or declared fires. However, this number decreased to around 2,500 last year, with only 12 to 15 incidents occurring in December. He attributes this decrease to successful awareness campaigns and public talks.
Regarding the department's work on the area's beaches, Cervantes Álvarez stated that they currently have about 15 certified lifeguards. Three of these lifeguards are stationed at Delfines and Marlin beaches. For the holiday season, an additional 10 will be deployed to public beaches, working in conjunction with Civil Protection personnel.
