A Viva Aerobus flight en route from Cancún, Quintana Roo to Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua was forced to make an emergency landing in Monterrey due to a detected fault. The National Flight Monitoring System in Mexico reported the flight in a state of emergency, prompting the diversion.
The flight, identified as VB2220, was scheduled to depart from Quintana Roo at 12:40 and arrive at 15:25. The flight monitor displayed the 7700 code, indicating a general emergency. The aircraft experienced cabin pressure issues while flying over the Gulf of Mexico, which triggered the emergency protocol.
Viva Aerobus confirmed that despite the depressurization not being severe, they had to activate the emergency protocol. The aircraft also had communication issues, complicating the emergency landing.
The cabin depressurization caused the Viva Aerobus flight to descend several thousand feet over the Gulf of Mexico. Assistance was requested from a nearby Volaris plane, which informed ground control of the situation. This led to the decision to land in Monterrey, the closest airport, due to the potential for further depressurization.
Upon landing in Monterrey, passengers were transferred to another plane, registered as XAVDH, to continue their journey to Ciudad Juárez. The replacement flight was estimated to depart at 16:10.
Viva Aerobus stated that the aircraft involved in the incident would be inspected to determine the cause of the problem. The airline emphasized, "At Viva, our utmost priority is the safety of our passengers. That's why we have these types of protocols, to ensure everyone can reach their destination safely."
The Institute of Geological and Atmospheric Research reported the flight's emergency status on social media, noting the rapid descent from 10,000 to 3,000 feet.
In a separate incident, Viva Aerobus reported that they had to divert another aircraft traveling from the Veracruz and Villahermosa airports due to fog. Passengers were reassigned to a new flight, registered as XA-VDH, and arrived at their original destination without further issues.
