The Municipal Sports Merit Awards 2024, held in Cancun, celebrated the achievements of ten distinguished athletes, coaches, and sports promoters. The ceremony, presided over by the municipal president of Benito Juárez, Ana Paty Peralta, acknowledged the individuals who have raised Cancun's profile in the national and international sports arena. This year's event recognized excellence across a range of sports, including table tennis, adapted artistic gymnastics, taekwondo, and skating.
The honorees were chosen based on their sporting accomplishments, commitment to their respective sports, and their ability to inspire the younger generation. Among the recipients were table tennis champions Clío Yohanam Bárcenas Escalona and Darío Arce Lara, who have both achieved considerable success in national and international competitions.
The ceremony also honored athletes with disabilities, including an 11-year-old world champion in adapted artistic gymnastics, and Cristian José González Vázquez, who is recognized for his prowess in adapted sports dance.
In addition to the athletes, the ceremony also acknowledged the contributions of coaches and sports promoters. Lezmar Antonio Fierro Navarro, a coach who has nurtured many taekwondo talents, and Jessica Judith Hau Jiménez, a promoter who has organized numerous events to boost inline skating in Cancun, were among those recognized.
Municipal President Ana Paty Peralta emphasized the significance of sports as a tool for instilling values and fostering social integration. She praised the athletes, stating, "These athletes serve as role models for all of us, showing that with effort and dedication, great goals can be achieved."
