Cancun Hospital Charges Soar: Family in Desperate Plea for Financial Support

The family of Adrián Fernández, a Spanish tourist currently in a medically induced coma in a Cancun hospital, is desperately appealing to the public for financial assistance. The family's travel health insurance can no longer cover the mounting medical costs. Fernández, his wife Sofia Parada, and their 7-year-old son were in Cancun for their honeymoon when a tragic accident struck last Sunday.

While swimming, Fernández suffered a digestive issue that led to drowning and subsequent cardiac arrest. Despite lifeguards' attempts to resuscitate him, Fernández was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Two days into his hospital stay, the family was informed that their insurance had maxed out at 450,000 pesos, leaving them in a precarious financial situation. Fernández's critical condition prevents his transfer to Spain for further medical treatment.

In a bid to raise funds for the escalating medical costs, the family has set up a GoFundMe campaign titled "Family Nightmare in Cancun". The daily cost of Fernández's hospital stay is a staggering 145,000 pesos. The family has reached out to the Spanish consulate in Mexico, but while they can assist with paperwork, they cannot cover the medical expenses.

The family is now urging Spanish authorities to intervene with Mexican officials to help alleviate their predicament. Unfortunately, their case is not unique. Another Spanish family with a critically ill relative in a Monterrey hospital has also appealed to Spanish authorities for assistance. Their hospital bills, after twenty days of hospitalization, have exceeded a million pesos.
