Jesús Almaguer, president of the Association of Hotels of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, has criticized the allocation of only 1,000 electoral ballots for tourists at special polling stations. He argues that this number is absurdly low considering that Cancun alone receives 500 flights daily.
Almaguer expressed his frustration, stating, "It's ludicrous to have only 1,000 ballots when we have more than 500 flights arriving daily. We know the number of visitors we have, we provide statistics per visitor and nationality. It's disheartening that they only assign 1,000 ballots for foreign polling stations. This is not only ridiculous, but also against the law as it infringes on a basic right."
He voiced his concerns before casting his vote at the polling stations set up at Kilometer Zero. Almaguer pointed out that this isn't the first time such an issue has occurred and it's likely happening in other tourist centers across the country as well.
The hotel executive noted that complaints about the lack of ballots started coming in early in the day. He said, "People are already voicing their disappointment. It's a certainty that they'll leave feeling let down. The lack of ballots is not only illegal, it's also deceptive. Inviting people to vote with extensive campaigning and then providing only 1,000 ballots is absurd."
Almaguer ended his statement by urging the National Electoral Institute (INE) to address this issue promptly.
