This Tuesday saw the launch of the 14th annual job fair hosted by the Association of Hotels in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres. The fair featured over 450 job openings across 14 different hotel brands.
Eduardo Domínguez, Executive Vice President of Hotels in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Mujeres, stated that the majority of the available positions are in operational areas within hotels such as Ocean Coral, Hayat, and Royalton. The roles primarily include kitchen staff, waiters, public area attendants, and housekeepers.
The salaries for these positions range from 8,000 to 22,000 pesos, with the age requirement being between 18 to 55 years. Both men and women are encouraged to apply.
While there are 450 jobs being advertised, typically attendees apply to two or three hotels. As the summer season approaches, many hotel staff are returning to work. Domínguez estimates that there is currently a staffing deficit of between 5 to 10%.
However, it's important to note that the industry is also expanding. Approximately 4,000 new rooms have been added this year alone, in addition to those in the northern zone, from Cancun and the continental part of Isla Mujeres.
Despite these challenges, hotel occupancy remains high, consistently above 75% and often exceeding 80%. This is largely due to the steady number of flights, which rarely fall below 470 and sometimes exceed 550, significantly contributing to hotel occupancy rates.
