Hotel owners in Cancun are issuing warnings to tourists about the potential risks associated with an impending "heat dome". This weather phenomenon is expected to bring temperatures exceeding 45 degrees across a large part of the country, including Quintana Roo, for several days or possibly weeks.
"The heat is quite severe, so we're advising hotels to remind their guests not to underestimate it," said Alejandro Cañedo, a representative from the Association of Hotels and Motels of Holbox. He added, "As a precaution, we're also distributing moist towelettes for tourists to cool off with. We suggest they spend more time in the shade and remind them that medical assistance is available if they feel unwell from too much sun exposure."
This intense heatwave is predicted to persist for at least the next 10 days. Furthermore, a "heat dome" is forecasted. This is a mass of hot air that forms in the atmosphere, especially during periods of high temperatures and stable weather conditions.
A heat dome occurs when a layer of warm air accumulates near the Earth's surface and is trapped by a layer of cooler air above it. This causes the heat to concentrate and intensify, resulting in extremely hot and oppressive weather conditions. Heat domes can last for several days or even weeks, posing a significant risk to human health, particularly to vulnerable groups such as small children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
