The residents of Cancún are grieving the death of a 12-year-old boy and voicing their concerns about the ongoing insecurity in the state. They lament that such incidents did not occur in the past.

The Hotel Zone in Cancún, Quintana Roo, is one of the most heavily patrolled areas this summer, with hundreds of state, federal, and municipal officers on duty. However, the ongoing turf wars between rival organized crime groups for control of drug sales have led to acts of violence that affect the general public.

On a recent Sunday, Santiago, a 12-year-old elementary school student, was fatally struck by a stray bullet while he was enjoying a day at the beach with his family. The assailants, armed men on a jet ski, approached Caracol beach, located at kilometer 7.5 of the Kukulcán boulevard in the hotel area. They fired at another man, who managed to escape unharmed, but one of the bullets hit Santiago. Despite receiving medical attention, he later succumbed to his injuries.

In response to this incident, security measures have been stepped up in Cancún's hotel area. Governor Mara Lezama has assured that she is working with the Hotel Council to enhance safety in the beaches and tourist areas. She stated, "I cannot disclose much about the ongoing investigation to avoid hindering it, but we are determined to find those responsible. We have responded swiftly, but a tragedy of this nature reminds us of the need for constant vigilance and preventive measures."

The incident has left both locals and tourists in a state of shock and mourning. They recall that such incidents were unheard of in Cancún just a few years ago. As local resident Mrs. Carmen Osorio put it, "This didn't used to happen. Cancún was very safe. I feel terrible, sad. I wish everyone would do their job sincerely, with dedication and honesty."
