On a Saturday afternoon, Cancún was once again the backdrop for a violent incident. This time, the event unfolded in the underground parking lot of Plaza Las Americas, where a man was fatally shot. Initial reports suggest that four armed individuals fired at least 10 shots at the man as he was about to enter his black Susuki Swift.

The alleged assailants had reportedly been tailing the victim for several minutes, waiting for the right moment to strike. After the shooting, they fled the scene in two separate groups. One group reportedly headed towards Tulum Avenue, while the other went towards Bonampak Avenue.

The incident prompted witnesses to call for help via the emergency number 911. Shortly after, members of the Quintana Roo State Attorney's Office (FGE) and local police officers arrived on the scene. The area was cordoned off as they began their investigation.

One of the first steps taken by the officers was to review the security camera footage in an effort to identify the attackers. These cameras are linked to the Command, Control, Computing, Communications, and Citizen Contact Center C5, which should assist in locating the culprits. Officers also conducted a brief sweep of the mall to gather additional information about the incident.

Investigators located the spent casings at the scene to help determine the type of weapon used in the attack. The Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) arrived a few minutes later to transport the body for an autopsy.

Customers at Plaza las Americas were delayed by approximately 20 minutes when retrieving their vehicles from the parking lot, as some cars were within the cordoned-off crime scene. A white Volkswagen Vento was reportedly hit as the assailants were fleeing the scene.

Despite the presence of private security staff at Plaza las Americas, it remains unclear whether the parking area was under surveillance at the time of the incident. This is one of many aspects currently under investigation by Cancún authorities.

According to Red Informativa Del Sureste, Quintana Roo ended 2024 with 714 intentional homicides, with Benito Juarez being the most violent municipality, accounting for 49 percent of the total. In the first week of 2025 alone, nine homicides were reported, three of which occurred in Cancún.

While there are no conclusive figures for the number of murders in Cancún this year, reports of homicides are a regular occurrence. In the week of January 13 to 18 alone, five homicides were reported. This escalating violence has resulted in a climate of fear among Cancún residents, who are increasingly concerned about their safety.
