On May 11, an armed attack in Cancún resulted in the death of Morena deputy coordinator, Manuel Santiago Tun Cen. The State Attorney General's Office has since announced that the motive behind the violent incident appears to be personal revenge.

The crime, classified as a qualified homicide, took place in the early hours of the day in Cancún's superblock 519. Santiago, also known as Manuel Santiago “N”, was serving as the Campaign Coordinator for local candidate Alberto Batun Chulim at the time of his death.

Investigators at the scene collected evidence which included six shell casings and a 9 millimeter caliber bullet, typically used exclusively by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The attack occurred outside Santiago's home when two individuals exited a taxi and one proceeded to shoot him multiple times. Santiago suffered multiple injuries, leading to his death at a local hospital. His body bore wounds on the chest, abdomen, right thigh, and forearm.

While Santiago was actively involved in a local political campaign, authorities have ruled out any connection between his role and the attack. They firmly believe the violent act was not related to the ongoing electoral process.

The collected evidence has been handed over to the Public Ministry to be integrated into the ongoing investigation. This includes witness statements and other relevant information. The authorities are committed to continuing their investigations and bringing those responsible for this heinous act to justice.
