The Benito Juárez City Council has submitted a proposal to the United Commissions to amend traffic regulations, with the aim of reinstating breathalyzer tests in Cancún. These tests were halted four years ago due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Pablo Gutiérrez Fernández, Secretary General of the Municipality of Benito Juárez, has indicated that significant changes are being planned. These will be discussed with council members from various committees including Citizen Security, Preventive Police, Traffic, Firefighters and Civil Protection; Regulatory Improvement, Transparency, Personal Data Protection and Access to Public Information; and Urban Development and Mobility.
For the implementation of this plan, new devices will be utilized, along with lapel cameras for the Preventive Police and Traffic officers.
The General Law of Mobility and Road Safety stipulates that it is illegal to operate vehicles if the breathalyzer reading exceeds 0.25 in exhaled air or 0.5 in blood. For motorcyclists, the limit is set at 0.1 in exhaled air or 0.2 in blood.
For those operating passenger or cargo transport vehicles, it is strictly prohibited to drive with any measurable concentration of alcohol.
