“Cancún Pride 2024: A Colorful Celebration of Diversity!”

Approximately 1,200 individuals attended the 20th anniversary of Cancún Pride 2024. The event, which took place on a Saturday afternoon, started at Malecón Tajamar and ended at the municipal palace. Here, a formal ceremony was held and a statement was read. The statement emphasized the importance of visibility and representation, urging attendees to make their presence known in their workplaces and families.

The march was a celebration of the rights and progress made by the LGBTQ+ community over the past two decades. Linger Méndez, the coordinator of Cancún Pride 2024, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to organize the event. He acknowledged the contributions of the committee, staff, activists, and attendees who made the event possible.

The event was a vibrant display of colorful flags, music, and unique costumes. Mothers were seen offering hugs to all attendees, regardless of their identities. The attendees acknowledged that while progress may seem slow, it is steady and they are determined to continue pushing for more rights.

The event was attended by several associations including the Cancún Collective, Queer Forum, Let's Raise Our Hands Cancún, Clarity and Movements, and Equal Social Circle. The general public was also in attendance.

Due to weather-related date changes, the planned sociocultural event could not be held, but a bazaar organized by Colectivo Cancuncito in Tajamar took place. However, the organizers stressed the importance of the march, promising to reschedule the sociocultural event.

Mia Michelle Quiala, one of the first trans women to march in Benito Juárez, was crowned the queen of Pride. She was accompanied by Irving Illeskas, who was named the king of diversity.

Over the past 20 years, the diverse community in Cancún has grown significantly, with people from all over Mexico and the world settling in Quintana Roo. The region is known for its welcoming attitude towards the LGBTQ+ community and has made significant legislative progress, including the recognition of gender changes and equal marriage.

Despite the progress, attendees acknowledged that there are still many challenges to overcome. However, they also celebrated the significant achievements and increased respect for the diverse community.
