Cancún Boosts Hurricane Preparedness with 87 Shelters!

Cancún is making significant strides in its preparations for the 2024 hurricane season. Johann Alejandro Hendricks Interian, the acting general director of Civil Protection, has announced the establishment of 87 hurricane shelters to date. This is an increase of 20 from the previous year, with the aim of having 100 shelters ready by the start of the season in June. Furthermore, 100 inspection tours have been carried out to assess the potential for further increases.

The rise in the number of shelters is a response to Cancún's growing population and burgeoning tourist numbers. The plan also takes into account the holiday season, ensuring that both tourists and local residents are catered for.

Hendricks also shed light on the process for hotel-based shelters. Hotel owners must request verification to serve as hurricane shelters. Civil Protection then carries out the necessary checks and issues a certificate if the hotel meets the required standards. If not, they provide recommendations for necessary improvements.
