Cancún Taxi Drivers Demand Release of Ex-Leader Amid Murder Allegations

A group of people wearing white shirts and caps gathered on a sunny day, with trees and a clear sky in the background.

Cancún taxi drivers are rallying for the release of their former leader, known as "Maffer", who is currently under arrest for his alleged involvement in the murder of a former union chief designer. The call for his release has been echoed by dozens, including union operators and family members, who maintain his innocence.

"Maffer's" wife, Yesenia, led a peaceful protest in Cancún. She highlighted her husband's deteriorating health due to diabetes, which is being exacerbated by his time in prison.

In response to the murder and other crimes involving taxi drivers in Cancún, local authorities have made several arrests. They have pledged to put an end to the culture of impunity within taxi driver unions in the Quintana Roo region.
