The new Olympic cycle in Mexico has kicked off with a sailing event at the Mayan Wind Fest, marking the start of the journey towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. This event will gather top young Mexican sailors, all vying for 14 spots in the second edition of the Junior Pan American Games in Asunción, scheduled for August.

The Mayan Wind Fest, taking place this weekend, will see a new generation of sailors take on the sea of Cancún. They will compete in categories such as ILCA, iQFoil, and Formula Kite. Standout competitors like Inés Flores and Rigel Gutiérrez will be aiming to make their mark in this event, which also serves as a qualifier for the adult Pan American Games in 2027.

The competition is expected to attract over 500 sailors, with 14 youth spots available. The Mexican delegation is currently selecting athletes to represent the country across more than 40 disciplines. Sailing, a sport that has produced many notable Mexican athletes, involves navigating a sail-propelled boat and includes eight Olympic classes.

The participation of Mariana Aguilar in the Paris 2024 Olympics has inspired young Mexican athletes to excel in this competition, which is expected to be highly competitive. This event is vital for the growth of sailing in Mexico and for nurturing future talents in the sport.
