Starting Monday, the bus fare from Cancún to Playa del Carmen will see an increase of 10 pesos, taking the total fare from 45 to 55 pesos. This was confirmed by operators from the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río taxi union. This equates to a near 20% increase in the cost of the service.
The fare increase will be applied across all stops offered by the bus service, with a particular impact on the entrances of various hotels located along the Riviera Maya corridor. The Playa Exprés service and buses from the Lázaro Cárdenas and Andrés Quintana Roo unions will also be subject to this fare increase.
On a recent route conducted at the main base in central Playa del Carmen, drivers were informing passengers about the fare increase. They indicated that physical signs detailing the new fares will be installed in the coming days.
Approximately 12,000 passengers use this service daily, according to the central base management. This includes both workers and tourists. The last fare increase on this route was more than five years ago, during the previous state administration.
A meeting was recently held at the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río taxi union, with all service stakeholders in attendance. Operators argued that the fare adjustment is necessary due to the rising costs of other products, especially fuel, in recent years.
As of now, there has been no official statement from any state authority, who regulate this service. The fare increase comes one month after the conclusion of the elections, where candidates, including taxi union leaders, pledged to support family economies.
