Cancún Tourist Zone Closed for Robbery Probe

Authorities in Cancún temporarily closed both directions of Kukulkan Boulevard, a major thoroughfare in the city’s hotel zone, as they pursued a group of armed robbers. The suspects had reportedly stolen a million pesos from the Royal Park hotel. This closure caused a significant traffic jam as numerous vehicles and public transport services were unable to pass.

Initial rumors circulated on social media suggesting that the authorities were stopping motorcyclists for not wearing a “vest”. Another rumor suggested that a group of motorcyclists were protesting and had blocked the tourist zone. However, these rumors were later debunked.

The real reason for the closure was that the Tourist Police were attempting to apprehend the occupants of a brown car linked to the hotel robbery. The police stopped a Jetta to inspect its occupants and a photo was shared on social media showing a man lying on the pavement next to the car. However, the man was subsequently released as he was found to have no connection with the robbery.

Despite the disruption caused by the closure of both lanes, the suspects were not apprehended. The incident led to traffic chaos and misinformation, highlighting the challenges faced by authorities in dealing with such situations.

Update

Regarding the recent robbery incident, Sumuano confirmed that the stolen vehicle has been recovered. However, the perpetrators managed to escape into the jungle with the stolen money and other belongings. The State Attorney General’s Office is currently investigating the incident and has already identified the suspects.
