A traffic officer in Cancun has been suspended from duty following allegations of bribery. The officer, a member of Cancun's Traffic Directorate, was caught on camera seemingly accepting money from a motorist in a suspected act of bribery.

The incident, which has sparked considerable controversy on social media, occurred on José López Portillo Avenue, one of the city's busiest thoroughfares. The car's onboard camera captured the officer, who appears to be in the middle of committing an infraction, receiving what looks like a sum of money from the driver, seemingly as part of an illicit arrangement.

The footage quickly went viral, clearly showing a breach of public service regulations and prompting widespread public outrage and an immediate response from the officer's department. Due to the widespread circulation of the video, the Municipal Secretary for Citizen Safety and Traffic (SMSCyT) of Benito Juarez released a statement confirming that the incident has been referred to the Directorate of Internal Affairs for further investigation. The statement noted that the incident, which seemingly shows the officer engaging in actions contrary to institutional guidelines, has been assigned case number SMSCT/DAI/017/01/2025.

The SMSCyT also clarified that while the officer in question has been suspended from his duties, it is only for the duration of the investigation. The authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to transparency and the integrity of the police force, stating that any behavior that contravenes the values and principles of public service will not be tolerated.
