El Calor de Cancún is set to join the National Women's Basketball League (LNBP) in 2025, becoming the tenth team in the women's circuit that was established in 2022. The Quintana Roo franchise has already started arranging logistics for their debut in the league, even though a start date has not yet been set.
"We made a promise when we founded this team, and we are now proud to confirm that we will have a women's team competing professionally," said Roberto Alvarado, the club's general manager. "We're currently working on preparations and will soon confirm details about the coach and players. We're excited and ready to bring the heat to the Caliente.Mx LNBP Women's League."
The Women's LNBP started in 2022 with eight teams. The following year, the number grew to 11, and in 2024, nine clubs participated: Santas de Potosí, Abejas de León, Adelitas de Chihuahua, Correcaminos de UAT, Rojas de Veracruz, Halcones de Jalapa, Panteras de Aguascalientes, Fuerza Regia de Monterrey, and Freseras de Irapuato.
Three franchises have won the title so far: Astros de Jalisco in 2022 (a team that ceased to exist by 2024), Adelitas de Chihuahua in 2023, and Fuerza Regia in 2024. The LNBP has not yet confirmed the schedule for the 2025 season. The previous season ran its regular phase from May 2 to June 29, with the playoffs taking place from July 4 to August 6. All participating franchises were guaranteed 16 regular phase matches.
It's worth noting that El Calor de Cancún joined the men's LNBP in 2024, where they made it to the Zone Semifinals. This marked the end of an eight-year period without professional basketball in the Poliforum Benito Juárez.
