Cancún has transformed one of its most popular beaches, Playa Las Perlas, into a fully accessible, all-inclusive beach. This marks the city's first official inclusive beach designed to accommodate people with disabilities.
Cancún's Mayor, Ana Paty Peralta, announced that the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) will oversee the maintenance of this public resort, ensuring it remains in optimal condition for all visitors. Playa Las Perlas has been reimagined to ensure universal enjoyment of the beach, both in and out of the water.
Peralta expressed pride in the initiative, stating, "The beauty of our sea is now accessible to everyone. We recognize that people with disabilities often face numerous obstacles, and it is our societal duty to eliminate these barriers. Actions like these help us bridge the gaps of inequality, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can enjoy these wonderful spaces."
The director of Zofemat, Justo Román Miranda Rocha, detailed the measures taken to make the beach accessible. These include the purchase of three wheelchairs, three amphibious chairs, two amphibious loungers, two amphibious walkers, and mats to facilitate water access from the beach.
In compliance with universal accessibility regulations, several adjustments have been made. These include separate bathrooms for people with disabilities, ramps, handrails, a deck with exclusive palapas, a tactile line, and QR code signage. The QR code leads to an explanatory video of Playa Las Perlas, which includes sign language interpretation for those with hearing impairments.
